Deep tissue and how it can actually benefit you

As a massage therapist I strive every day to improve my techniques to better serve my clients, and in the end I know that I am only as good as my last client. In my experience if deep tissue is performed well it can have some of the most long term beneficial effects on a client. While giving Swedish can have wonderful effects in relaxing clients when it comes to neck and shoulder pain a positive deep tissue session can help with the soreness and pain for weeks rather then days.
When done well deep tissue work can lead to a decrease in stress, pain, tension, stiffness, soreness, and even pinched nerves. Certain techniques can break up scar tissue and can assist in helping people recover from surgery faster. While Swedish is wonderful at relieving stress, when you are in pain it's actually more beneficial to get a deep tissue massage that will generally have longer ranging positive effects.
Yet there has been a lot of stigma in the massage industry surrounding the concept of Deep tissue work, but it's important to note that it's not always a bad thing. What many do not know is there are actually multiple styles of deep tissue work that are being practiced today. While there are some massage therapists that try to use as much pressure as possible on a client this is actually the wrong way around giving a good massage.
Giving focused pressure that is well within the tolerance of the client while making sure the client is comfortable is actually a better way to practice this style of massage. It isn't about pain, but about working with the specific needs of a client to create the best possible outcome. It's important to make sure the massage therapist is a deep tissue specialist who is willing to find out exactly how things are working.
